Refugiums are basically another aquarium, were we let algae grow freely. The use of algae is very beneficial for the water quality of your aquarium. The algae will consume fish metabolic wastes produced by fish and invertebrates. The main nutrients to be consumed are nitrates, carbon dioxide and phosphates. This filter need’s a light source so the algae can grow. The photo-period can be of 24 hours of light, but the algae need a resting period, so you can make 18 or 19 hours of light and the rest dark. The photo-period has to be opposite to the main tank. The main tank during is dark period will produce a lot of carbon dioxide, making the levels of carbonic acid go up, making the pH go down. So to fight this tendency and make the pH stable the refugium light must be on so that the algae in this, will consume the carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen by photosynthesis. Another big advantage of using refugiums is that they will keep a good population, on the algae, of zooplankton, amphipods and others that will be suck by the pump brought to the tentacles of the corals. The larvae’s of these specimens will bring to the main tank a constant supply of fresh plankton.
