A pond is essentially a small, enclosed body of water that is, in many respects, cut off form the outside world. If an artificial pond can successfully reproduce its natural counterparts by being large enough and sparsely stocked with fish, and by containing abundant plant growth, then it will become almost self-sustaining. Yet this is the exception rather than the rule; the majority of ponds constructed in gardens or in patios tend to contain a somewhat higher ratio of fish to plants than an equivalent natural body of water. in such circumstances, conditions in a pond will quickly deteriorate to an intolerable level, unless artificial means are employed to prevent this for happening.
