1. Mechanical Filtration - dual strainers, large capacity (1-1/2 liters, approximately 1/2 gallon) pre-filter, one coarse and one fine filter pad, and a large capacity (4 liters, approximately 1 gallon) filter insert designed for mechanical filter media to trap solid debris-like dirt, uneaten food, and fish waste.
2. Biological Filtration - the most critical kind of aquarium filtration is obtained via the two large (4 liters, approximately 1 gallon each) second and third filter inserts. Each is designed to hold biological filter media. This media aids in the formation of beneficial bacteria, which helps eliminate toxic ammonia and nitrite that accumulate in aquarium water.
3. Chemical Filtration - the large capacity (4 liters, approximately 1 gallon) third filter insert can be filled with your preferred chemical filter media, instead of using a second layer of biological media within the filter. Chemical filter media aids in removing odor, discoloration, and water impurities.

Powerful, Adjustable Filtration:

1. Filter Capacity - designed to simultaneously filter a large capacity (3.6 gallons) of aquarium water, this canister filter can handle the often complicated filtration needs of even the largest fresh or saltwater aquarium. The filter powerfully moves water through six filtration stages (pre-filter, two filter pads, and three media filters) in a closed system that effectively cleans your aquarium water without sacrificing either the aesthetic or functional means of your system.
2. Adjustable Flow - easily change the amount of aquarium filtration by adjusting the top-mounted, easily accessible control lever. You can also monitor the amount of flow via the easy-view Flow Indicator Monitor. This monitor also ensures proper, continual operation of your filter without disassembling the entire unit and disrupting the filtration process, which oftentimes adds unnecessary stress to your aquarium inhabitants.

Safety and Easy Upkeep:

1. Safety Adaptor and Hose Guard - prevent accidental filtration stops and messy hose disconnections with dual safety features. This is a must when moving the filter to your preferred cleaning location, ensuring the filter contents are emptied where desired, instead of on the floor between the aquarium and cleaning station. Plus, these safety features also prevent accidental hose disconnections should the filter be bumped or moved during normal filtration use.
2. Closing Clips - four, durable plastic clips need both an upward and outward motion to open the filter for cleaning and maintenance. This keeps the filter properly functioning during normal use, while also preventing the pump head from becoming dislodged from the canister by accidental bumps or curious fingers. Thus, your aquarium water remains within the closed filter system and off of your floor.
3. Handled Filter Inserts - each filter insert boasts a sturdy handle for easy media removal during cleaning and maintenance. These handles also make in-basket media rinsing easy and convenient.

Installing Your Eheim Pro III
Prior to installing your Eheim Pro III filter, remove each component from the box, check for any shipping damage, and familiarize yourself with the Parts List (included with the product or found below). Some installation accessories are packed in the filter container.

NOTE: When selecting a location for the filter, pay attention to the maximum vertical clearance. To achieve optimal operational safety, the maximum height between the surface of the tank water and the bottom of the canister filter is 70". The minimum height between the surface of the tank water and upper edge of the canister filter is 4". The best location to place the filer is in a cabinet directly underneath the aquarium.

TIP: The Eheim Pro III canister filter is fitted with 4 casters. By slightly tilting the entire assembly, the filter should fit into almost any sized, suitable aquarium cabinet. Also, the slight tilting of the filter is necessary to utilize each caster. This is a design feature to keep the load of the filter off of the casters when the filter is functioning in its upright position, thereby keeping the filter stable and safe. Always operate the filter in a standing position.

Installing the Hose
TIP: Any kinks that form in the hoses, can be easily pressed out. Simply soak each hose in warm water to render them pliable and then press out any kinks.

1. Place each Strainer on each Suction Pipe and fit at the desired locations in the aquarium, using two Suction Holders per pipe.
2. Place the Nozzle Tube onto the Outlet Bend, using a short section of Tubing.
   1. NOTE: Cut each hose to the required length, leaving enough length to push the hose up to 3/8" onto both the Nozzle Tube and Outlet Bend.
3. Fit to the desired location on the inside wall of the aquarium, using two Suction Holders.
   1. NOTE: The Nozzle Tube may be installed either below or at the water line, depending on the degree of surface movement desired. Make sure all hoses are as short as possible and that they do not sag or kink. Sagging hoses can worsen the suction process considerably.
4. Connect the Hoses from each Suction Pipe to the respective left and right Hose Connectors on the Safety Adaptor.
   1. NOTE: The correct Hose Connectors to which the Suction Pipe Hoses are connected are marked with a downward pointing arrow - signifying the flow of water is going "into" the canister filter.
5. Connect the Hose from the Outlet Bend and Nozzle Tube to the middle Hose Connector on the Safety Adaptor.
   1. NOTE: The correct Hose Connectors to which the Nozzle Tube Hose is connected is marked with an upward pointing arrow - signifying the flow of water is going "out" of the canister filter.
6. Fit each half of the Hose Guard around the now connected inlet and outlet tubes. The Hose Guard should be positioned close to the Safety Adaptor to allow optimal prevention of accidental hose disconnection.
7. Snap the two Hose Guard halves together.

NOTE: For optimal filtration, periodically check each hose connection for proper fit, kinks, and flowage. Also, it is recommended you use specifically designed Eheim Tubing for all your Pro III needs.

Filling the Filter with Suitable Filter Materials

1. Remove the Safety Adaptor:
   1. Turn the Shut-off Lever to the "OFF" position.
   2. Press the red Safety Catch (this catch can only be pressed when the filter is in the "OFF" position).
2. Open and empty the Filter Container:
   1. Grasp each of the closing clips on the bottom edge. Pull the bottom edge out and lift up to fold the clip outward.
   2. Gently lift the entire Pump Head up and away from the Filter Container.
   3. Set the Pump Head on a flat surface.
   4. Remove the Pre-filter, Lattice Screen Cover, and white Filter Pad from the Filter Container. Set aside.
   5. Remove each of the three Filter Inserts by grasping the plastic handle and gently lifting each upward. Set aside.
3. Fill each Filter Insert with desired media (not included):
   1. TIP: For optimal, trouble-free filtration, it is recommended that you use original Eheim filter materials at all times. Specifically designed for use with all Eheim External Canister Filters, each media ensures ideal beneficial bacteria growth for clean, healthy aquarium water.
   2. Fill the bottom Filter Insert to just below the top edge with Eheim Ehfimech (item #400984, not included).
   3. NOTE: Do not overfill the Filter Insert, as they will not properly seat on top of each other, which will disrupt the filter process and/or make it impossible for you to reassemble the filter correctly and securely latch the Pump Head to the Filter Container.
   4. Fill the second and third Filter Insert to just below the top edge each with Eheim Substrat Pro (item #12876, not included) or Eheim Ehfisubstrat (item #401036, not included). If desired, the third Filter Insert may also be filled with your preferred chemical media (not included).
   5. Next, rinse each Filter Insert and media with room temperature, aquarium-safe water. Mix the media thoroughly while rinsing, until no cloudiness is visible in the water.
   6. Once rinsed, insert the bottom Filter Insert (from step # 3-b above) into the bottom of the Filter Container.
   7. NOTE: For optimal fit, ensure the Filter Insert Handle is pushed all the way down.
   8. Insert the second and third (from step # 3-d above) Filter Insert into the Filter Container.
   9. Next, lay the white Filter Pad on the top (or third) Filter Insert, so that the pad is resting on top of the pushed in Filter Insert Handle.
   10. NOTE: The white Filter Pad will not function correctly if it is placed underneath the Filter Insert Handle. Nor will the Pump Head securely latch to the Filter Container if the white Filter Pad is placed on top of the third Filter Insert Handle.
   11. Finally, place the Lattice Screen Cover on top of the white Filter Pad.
4. Assemble the Prefilter:
   1. NOTE: The Pre-filter collects coarse dirt from the aquarium water so that the water that flows through each filtration stage is pre-filtered. This step greatly reduces the amount of dirt and physical pollutants that reach the Filter Inserts - guaranteeing highly efficient biological decomposition and a longer service life. The Pre-filter can be easily removed for cleaning. To make interim Pre-filter cleaning even easier, a Pre-filter Transporter Dish is included.
   2. Insert the Pre-filter with blue Filter Pad into the Filter Container. It should snugly rest on top of the Lattice Screen Cover, with the Pre-filter overflow tube above the Partition (the opening/tube in the left rear corner when filter front is facing you).
5. Close the filter and insert Safety Adaptor:
   1. Check that each Pump Head Gasket is clean and free from damage. Wipe any excess soiling from the gasket.
   2. Place the Pump Head onto the Filter Container.
   3. Close each of the four Closing Clips by latching the top edge of each Closing Clip onto the Pump Head and then pulling the bottom edge of each Closing Clip down. Push the bottom edge of each Closing Clip in toward the Filter Container.
   4. Push the Safety Adaptor into the Pump Head, by applying light pressure until it "locks" with an audible "click."
      1. NOTE: The Shut-off Lever must be in the "OFF" position in order to insert the adaptor. Otherwise, the safety mechanism prevents the Safety Adaptor from engaging.

Starting and Adjusting the Eheim Pro III

1. First, turn the Shut-off Lever to the "ON" position to open each of the three valves.
   1. NOTE: If you cannot flip the Lever to the "ON" position, the Safety Adaptor has not been correctly fitted to the Pump Head. If this is the case, repeat step #5-d above.
2. Prime the pump by pressing the Priming Aid firmly several times until the Filter Container fills with water.
   1. TIP: Keep the Nozzle Tube (water return side of the filtration process) above the surface of the water while filling to ensure all air is properly bled from the filter.
3. Once the Filter Container has filled with water, plug the unit into a common receptacle.
   1. NOTE: Create a drip loop while plugging the unit in to prevent possible electrocution from water running down the electrical cord and into the outlet.

TIP: Depending on the way the Intake Hoses are situated in the tank, it is possible that only one of the two hoses may initially fill with water. If this occurs, with your fingers, gently - but firmly - squeeze together the filled suction hose until the empty hose has filled.

4. Plug the open end of the Nozzle Tube with the included plug.

Regulating the Filter Flow

1. To set the desired filter performance, slowly turn the Shut-off Lever towards the "OFF" position, until the desired flow level is reached. You can monitor the flow level via the Flow Indicator Window.
   1. The Flow Indicator Window allows you to continually and easily monitor the flow of water through the Eheim Pro III Canister Filter, as well as quickly spot any faults that may occur. If the Float within the Flow Indicator Window touches the red bar (on the bottom of the window) at any time, the filter is not performing to its full potential and the filter system must be checked.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting Your Eheim Pro III
Always unplug from the power source before inspecting or disassembling the Eheim Pro III Canister Filter for any reason. Also, remove the Safety Adaptor and carefully move the filter to an easily accessible location with the Pump Head removed. After inspection, cleaning, and/or maintenance, use the Priming Aid to re-fill the Filter Container with water. Remember, the Priming Aid only functions when the Pre-filter is empty. Remember to also fashion a drip loop while plugging the filter into an outlet.

Cleaning and Maintenance

1. Daily:
   1. Ensure the filter is running.
   2. Ensure the Intake Tubes and Nozzle Tube and all Hoses are free from debris, kinks, and any other obstructions.
   3. Check the flow level of the filter and adjust accordingly if necessary.
2. Weekly:
   1. Check the Pre-filter.
   2. If necessary, clean the Pre-filter:
      1. Remove the Pre-filter from the Filter Container.
      2. Place the Pre-filter in the Prefilter Transportation Dish.
      3. Empty the Pre-filter.
      4. Thoroughly rinse the blue Filter Pad under lukewarm, aquarium-safe water, until the water runs clear.
      5. TIP: Replace the blue Filter Pad after its second or third cleaning.
   3. Remove the Lattice Cover Screen and thoroughly rinse in lukewarm, aquarium-safe water, until the water runs clear.
   4. Check the white Filter Pad. Replace this pad as necessary. Since this pad is designed to catch debris, any dirt it has caught will be difficult to wash away. As such, this pad is designed for one time use.
   5. Check the Pump Head Gaskets for dirt and/or unusual wear. If necessary, clean any soiling away from the gaskets with lukewarm water, or replace the damaged gasket.
   6. Replace the Pump Head and reconnect and restart the filter.
3. Monthly:
   1. Remove the Pre-filter, Lattice Cover Screen, Filter Pad, and all three Filter Inserts.
   2. Rinse each Filter Insert and media thoroughly under lukewarm, aquarium-safe water, until the water runs clear and clean.
      1. TIP: If changing the media in the Filter Inserts, mix approximately 1/3 of the used filter media with the new media to aid the multiplication of beneficial bacteria.
   3. Clean the Hoses with a universal cleaning brush.
   4. Wash the Filter Container with lukewarm, aquarium-safe water and re-insert each Filter Insert, Filter Pad, Lattice Cover Screen, and Pre-filter.
   5. Clean the Pump Chamber.
      1. Open the Pump cover by turning the Sealing Ring and removing it.
      2. Pull the Impeller out of the Pump Chamber.

      NOTE: Due to strong magnetic forces, there is a risk of crushing your fingers while removing the impeller. It is best to remove the impeller via the gentle use of pliers.

      3. Carefully rinse the Ceramic Shaft, Impeller, and Pump Chamber.
      4. Replace all parts and close the pump chamber.
   6. Clean the Flow Indicator Window and Float.
      1. Remove the Safety Adaptor.
      2. Empty all Hoses.
      3. Once all Hoses are empty, remove each Hose from the Safety Adaptor.
      4. Press together the Safety Catch on the back of the adaptor and move the Indicator Lid forward to remove.
      5. Remove the Indicator Housing.
      6. Carefully Remove the Brace and take the Float and Spring out of the housing.
      7. Gently clean with a brush and lukewarm, aquarium-safe water.
      8. Replace all parts.

Troubleshooting

1. Filter cannot be closed:
   1. Filter Inserts are not correctly seated. Re-assemble Filter.
   2. Filter Inserts are too full. Remove enough media so level is just below the top edge.
   3. Partition is not fitted properly. Re-assemble partition.
   4. Gasket is not fitted properly. Re-assemble gasket.
2. Top of filter leaks:
   1. Closing clips are not properly closed. Open and re-close all clips.
   2. Sealing areas or gaskets are soiled. Clean sealing areas and gaskets.
   3. Sealing rings are not fitted or are damaged. Insert sealing ring correctly, or replace.
3. Pump does not work:
   1. Power to outlet is off. Check power supply.
   2. Impeller Shaft is broken. Replace shaft.
   3. Impeller is missing or blocked by bits of debris. Re-fit impeller and/or clean pump chamber.
4. Filter performance has greatly deteriorated:
   1. Safety Adaptor level position is not correct. Check lever setting and adjust.
   2. Safety Adaptor is soiled. Remove adaptor, open Shut-off Lever and clean openings.
   3. Hose installation is incorrect. Check for kinks, blocked tubes, etc., and fix.
   4. Hoses are soiled. Remove and clean and/or replace all hoses.
   5. Only one Suction Pipe is filled with water. Squeeze the filled suction pipe with your fingers until the other pipe fills with water.
   6. Strainer is blocked. Remove coarse dirt, debris, etc., and clean strainer.
   7. Filter media is heavily soiled. Clean filter media.
   8. Filter media is placed in a media bag. It is recommended that long-term filter media used in this filter not be put into a media bag, as this leads to greatly reduced pump performance.
   9. Filter media is not cleaned properly. When cleaning the media, remove it from the Filter Insert and rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm, aquarium-safe water.
   10. Filter media is incorrectly assembled. Check that the filter media is assembled in the correct, recommended order. See Filling the Filter with Suitable Filter Materials, Step #3 above (in the Installing Your Eheim Pro III Filter section). Also, ensure the white Filter Pad is not placed under the top Filter Insert Handle.
   11. Filter pad has not been replaced. Be sure to replace the white Filter Pad every time you thoroughly clean your filter.
   12. Pump is dirty. Clean pump chamber.
   13. Water is not circulating properly. Shut off filter. Re-prime the filter canister. Keep the tip of the Nozzle Tube above the surface of the water while filling the Filter Container to ensure all air is properly bled from the filter.
5. Air is in the filter:
   1. Filter location. Top edge of the filter should be no less than 4" and no more than 70" beneath the surface of the tank water.
   2. Air is being sucked in through a hose. Check all hose connections and hoses for any leaks.
   3. Nozzle Tube is too close to the Intake Tubes. Move Nozzle Tube further away from the Intake Tubes.
   4. Filter media is heavily soiled. Clean filter media.
   5. Filter media is not cleaned properly. When cleaning the media, remove it from the Filter Insert and rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm, aquarium-safe water.
   6. Filter media is placed in a media bag. It is recommended that long-term filter media used in this filter not be put into a media bag, as this leads to greatly reduced pump performance.
6. Shut-Off Lever on Safety Adaptor is stiff:
7. Priming Aid does not work:
   1. Shut-off valve flap in pre-filter does not close. Check around the valve flap for soiling and clean if necessary. Check that the valve flap fits correctly.
   2. Pre-filter is filled with water. Empty prefilter and repeat priming. Priming Aid only works when the pre-filter is empty.

Eheim Pro III Product Specifications
Made of durable, attractive plastic housings with two intake and one output valve. Replacing Eheim Pro III Filter Media

1. Remove the Safety Adaptor:
   • Turn the Shut-off Lever to the "OFF" position.
   • Press the red Safety Catch (this catch can only be pressed when the filter is in the "OFF" position).

3. Fill each Filter Insert with desired media (not included):

   • Next, lay the White Filter Pad on the top (or third) Filter Insert, so that the pad is resting on top of the pushed in Filter Insert Handle.
   • NOTE: The White Filter Pad will not function correctly if it is placed underneath the Filter Insert Handle. Nor will the Pump Head securely latch to the Filter Container if the White Filter Pad is placed on top of the third Filter Insert Handle.
   • Finally, place the Lattice Screen Cover on top of the White Filter Pad.
4. Assemble the Pre-filter:

Filter Pad Maintenance and Replacement
The White Filter Pad provides fine mechanical filtration. Since adhering dirt particles cannot be rinsed out completely, the filter pad must not be used more than once.

The coarse Blue Filter Pad may be re-used two to three times. Wash gently under running water before re-inserting so that some of the resident bacteria are retained.
