Aquarium Lighting
is one of the most important components of a successful reef aquarium. It is
also amongst the most confusing and misunderstood of all aquarium supplies and
equipment. Proper lighting intensity is required for corals and/or invertebrates
to survive. Similar to plants, corals and many invertebrates require light for
photosynthesis to generate energy and food. If your corals and invertebrates do
not receive enough light for photosynthesis from your aquarium lights, they
will slowly starve and eventually die. Through the water column on a reef as you go down there will appear different corals. Those corals in that particular depth between other factors are adapted to a specific light intensity. Knowing that, there are different light
bulbs. Low
to moderate lighting: PC (Power Compact) fluorescent lighting and VHO
(Very High Output) lighting are appropriate for corals that require low to
moderate lighting for example: order
Zoanthidea (zoanthus, palythoa, parazoanthus) and order
Corallimorpharia (discosoma, pseudocorynactis). Moderate
to High lighting: T5 systems are great for corals requiring moderate
lighting for example: Class
Hydrozoa (hydroids, order milleporina and order stylasterina). Intense
lighting: Metal Halide systems are the best choice for corals requiring
intense lighting for example: Order
Actiniaria (sea anemones), Order
Scleractinia (hard corals), Mollusks
(Tridacnas). Lunar/moonlights can create a more
realistic lighting environment for your tank. These LED fixtures may
promote lunar spawning cycles in corals and reef life while giving the opportunity
to observe the nocturnal fauna. It is very common to supplement
metal halide lights with actinic T5, VHO or PC lights to simulate a dusk/dawn
effect and to add more blue coloration to the tank.
