Filters can be defined as life support systems. The filtration is divided in 3 categories, mechanical filtration, chemical filtration and biological filtration. Mechanical filtration is basically the capture of small debris (food particles, suspended particles resulting from biological activity) through membrane retention. This type of filtration makes water crystal clear. An example is the canister filters Chemical filtration is the removal of odors, discolorations and dissolved organics by absorption or adsorption by media such as carbon or zeolite. Biological filtration is the removal/transformation of nitrogen compounds. Bacteria’s colonize a surface and consume the nitrogen compounds. The first bacteria’s to work are the nitrossomas, this ones will transform the ammonia into nitrite. When it starts to appear nitrite a new group of bacteria’s will appear the nitrobacter. The final product is the nitrate that can be removed by anaerobic bacteria’s, plants, water change or chemical filtration.

Power Filters

The sponge filters are a great way of having filtration for very sensible organisms, organisms that would be damaged by a impeller of a pump. There filter are the perfect choice for breeders, they will not arm fish larvae or other king of larvae.

Power filters, are great for smaller aquariums, less then 50 gallons. The price is very accessible. Power filters are very easy to use, plug in and go. These filters most of the times incorporate the 3 filtration steps, chemical, mechanical and biological.

Refugiums are basically another aquarium, were we let algae grow freely. The use of algae is very beneficial for the water quality of your aquarium. The algae will consume fish metabolic wastes produced by fish and invertebrates.

Canister filters are great filters for fish only tanks, they work by making water pass trough trays with different medias. This kind of filter is a very complete filter with mechanical filtration, biological and chemical. Canister filters are very easy to use; you only need to plug in.

Wet/Dry Filters

The wet/dry filters are very effective in the fast breaking of ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. The fast breaking of ammonia is accomplish because the bioballs are always wet, but not submerged in water.
